You are Rachel Dove, fifteen, gathering food on a river island as drought pushes your missionary family deeper into Pondoland. A storm turns the dry channel to flood before you can cross back, and a stranger, Richard Darrien, wades in and pulls you to high ground as his horse is swept away.
