You play Castruccio, fourteen and away from your father's house without leave, come to Florence to watch a pageant of hell staged on boats along the Arno. The crowd is still cheering when the crowded bridge above them cracks and gives way. An old family friend, Marco, finds you in the chaos and brings you to the Adimari palace, where your childhood friend Euthanasia shelters you until the roads reopen and your father's forgiveness must be sought.
