You manage a mountain mine in Chiapas when an invitation brings you to the hacienda of Don Ignatio, whose chapel tablet honors an Englishman and a woman called Maya, Princess of the Heart. Over an evening of glyphs and an emerald, your host admits he has seen a living city no map records, then refuses to say more. Two years later, dying, he sends for you and hands over the account he has written instead of speaking it: his and Strickland's journey to that city, and to Maya.
