About this story
Snowed in overnight, you sleep in a chamber with names scratched into the sill, and something outside the window asks to be let in. The housekeeper knows the whole of it: two houses, two generations, and a boy carried home from Liverpool who was never forgiven. She tells it to you — and Heathcliff is still your landlord.
Who you’ll meet
Heathcliff on the moors, c. 1801 — the dark center of gravity every other character orbits.
How it opens
The year was 1801, and Thrushcross Grange had a new tenant before winter closed the moor roads.
Lockwood returned from his landlord's house with peat smoke in his coat and mud dried along his boots.
LockwoodHeathcliff received me as if hospitality were a tax he had contested and paid.
