You and your fishing companion Tonnison camp forty rough miles out in a nameless corner of western Ireland, a fortnight's stay agreed with their driver, until a villager's broken warning sends you upriver rather than home. Past a waterfall and a stand of hazel, the ground opens into a vast pit holding a collapsed house ringed by black water, and inside it a manuscript describing a man, his sister, and a dog that once answered something in that same pit. The account breaks off mid-warning, and something is already moving above you.
