You are young Wychecombe, gathering cliffside flowers for Mildred Dutton while her father scans the fog from the signal station for an unidentified fleet. A crumbling ledge drops you onto a narrow shelf, and Mildred rigs a signal halyard while her father and old Sir Wycherly haul you up hand over hand. Before anyone recovers from the fall, two strangers climb up from the beach: Admiral Oakes, whose fleet has been feeling its way through the fog beneath you, and Admiral Bluewater, still commanding it unseen offshore.
