You play d'Artagnan, riding out of Gascony toward Paris on a horse whose colour announces you in every village, carrying your father's letter of introduction to Treville. In the inn yard at Meung, a scarred gentleman at the window makes a joke about the horse, and the quarrel you want ends instead with servants' sticks and your hand in the dust. A carriage waits on the road; the woman inside it mentions the cardinal. Afterwards, your coat pocket is empty.
