You are Heidi, climbing the Alm behind an aunt with a train to catch. Dete has a position waiting in Frankfurt and no room in it for a child, so she is delivering you to a grandfather you barely know — the man the village calls Alm-Uncle and gives six reasons for avoiding. He is mending a stool outside his hut when you arrive, and asks Dete how soon duty will carry her back down. You pick the hayloft. One of Peter's goats walks in and stands beside you.
