You are Diamond, a coachman's son sleeping above the stable, when North Wind's voice comes through a knothole, asking you to free the lock of her hair caught in the wall. Loosed, she carries you through a stormy night to sink a ship, leaving you alone in a cathedral gallery until morning. Weeks later she carries you north by ship and drifting ice to a country she cannot enter herself, and you walk on alone through the cold at her heart into a green land beyond.
