You and your brothers and sister dig up a furred, bad-tempered creature in the gravel pit — the Psammead — who grants exactly one wish a day and lets every result vanish at sunset. The first wish, for beauty, leaves you starving and unrecognised by your own cook; the second, for gold, brings a constable to the door. By the last, a careless wish turns the baby of the family into a grown man in flannels who no longer remembers he is two years old.
