The Witching Hill office is a varnished wooden box beneath corrugated iron, with a plate-glass window facing raw lawns and red brick. My daily work is to show empty Queen Anne houses, soothe tenants, and wait for a reason to leave the counter. You step into this one-chapter preview with Gillon at the center, where choices turn on the people, promises, and pressure already in the room. The office will have a report by evening, but the report cannot yet say what made the hole. The chapter closes on a continuation question rather than resolving the novel's larger arc.
