
Midnight at Ogilvy's observatory at Ottershaw: a jet of white light rises off the edge of Mars, lasts under a second, and goes into the log book. You play the writer who was at the eyepiece. The note you send a London paper draws no reply, the flashes keep coming for nights, and your wife observes that Mars is still farther away than the grocer. Then something green crosses the sky, comes down beyond Horsell, and inside the pit something is knocking.
