Palomo barks three times toward the lower trail, and two federal soldiers kick in the door of a mountain hut wanting supper. You play Demetrio Macias, waiting in the shadow by the hearth while your wife feeds them; when the captain turns toward her, you step into the light with a rifle. They go, taking two tortillas and leaving a promise to come back with the regiment. By sunrise your wife and child are on the path to her father's, and the thorn fence is full of men.
