A storm off Knockcalltecrore drives your driver Andy to shelter at Widow Kelligan's, where talk of the Snake's Pass — a lost crown, a shifting bog — gives way to gossip about Murtagh Murdock, the moneylender no one names above a whisper. Phelim Joyce arrives injured, racing to pay his debt before Murdock's deadline, and Andy lends his mare to help him make it. Murdock arrives first, with a sheriff's paper proving he bought Joyce's land that morning, and outside, the storm has begun moving the bog toward Joyce's fields.
