You play Mariano Rimini, setting out on what should be one last family trading voyage before it is decided whether your brother Lucien enters the Church or marries Juliet. A corsair under Sidi Hassan boards the ship instead; in the fighting, the passenger Bacri strikes you unconscious rather than let the fight go further, and by nightfall the whole family is chained together in an Algiers bagnio. The chapter ends with Bacri's loyalties still unproven and only his uncertain influence standing between the Riminis and years at the quarry.
