Epiphany night in the Place de Greve: the crowd that walked out of a poet's mystery play is yours now, and the drum and the goat hold it. You play Esmeralda. Then torches come from the Palais de Justice — the Feast of Fools has crowned Notre-Dame's deaf bellringer its pope, and the procession collides with your carpet. A black-robed archdeacon breaks it up with a gesture. Quasimodo obeys, then turns to find you still watching.
