You play Prince Amerigo, days from marrying Maggie Verver, when her oldest friend Charlotte Stant asks you to help her choose a wedding gift. In a curiosity shop you find a gilded crystal bowl with a crack the gold conceals, and together you leave it unbought rather than explain what it might mean. Over dinner Maggie asks to keep Charlotte near for good, and neither of you tells her what almost went home in a box.
