The Karamazovs arrive at a monastery to have an ailing elder settle what a father owes his eldest son. You play Alexei, the youngest, a novice and the only one expecting peace. Your father performs his own disgrace for an audience, Ivan reads out figures nobody wants, and Dmitri comes in late insisting he was given the wrong hour. The quarrel turns out to be about a woman as well as money. Then the elder crosses the cell and bows at Dmitri's feet.
