The old church between Cairnhope's forks had stood deserted but guarded since the village moved into the valley. Pincher has led me west of the peak for a lost sheep, where neither man nor flock usually travels. You step into this one-chapter preview with Janet Eaves at the center, where choices turn on the people, promises, and pressure already in the room. The church remained dark again, concealing who had entered it and what work required a fire no lawful keeper had lit. The chapter closes on a continuation question rather than resolving the novel's larger arc.
