You have run Danton Hall alone for years on the Captain's letters, and now one letter announces two arrivals at once: his daughter Kate, home from England, and an unexplained invalid named Richards. While the west rooms are readied, an unnamed caller turns out to be your own brother Frank, back from medical study and hiding at the presbytery. He slips away before the carriages arrive, leaving you to receive Kate, and a guest no one downstairs is shown.
