You are Richard Hannay, disguised as the pacifist Cornelius Brand and sent into a Cotswolds house of pacifists to find one hidden German agent. Fellow volunteer Mary Lamington slips you a coded page under the dinner plates, leading you to a wealthy neutral named Moxon Ivery, whose glasshouse hides more than orchids. Ivery offers a courier's run to Holland, then recites the phrase meant to mark a friend. You take the packet anyway — and outside, Mary warns you it is bait, and Fosse has orders to kill you tonight.
