On a November night, you are a carpenter visiting Joan Sheppard, a widow whose husband died at Tyburn, and her infant son Jack, asleep beside an execution handbill. You offer help without demanding the child, until a fugitive named Darrell bursts in ahead of armed pursuers and throws his cloak over your shoulders. The men mistake you for their quarry, then seize baby Jack as a hostage when the truth comes out. You free him, but Joan is left hurt and dragged off by the men who came for Darrell.
