
Rain floods the yard of the White Hart Inn as you and Mr Wardle chase down an elopement: his sister Rachael has run off with the smooth-talking Alfred Jingle. Sam Weller, the inn's quick-eyed bootblack, reads mud, initials, and gossip well enough to name the very room. Jingle already holds a marriage licence when the door opens, and what follows is not a rescue but a negotiation, ending on a blank cheque and a woman asking whether she was loved or merely priced.
