You are Maitland, whose evening at the Olympic Club with Dr. Frank Barton is interrupted by news that a tattooed corpse, a man last seen drinking with a black-bearded stranger, has fallen from a snow cart. His daughter Margaret is your ward, at school in Devon, and you race a telegram to break the news yourself. You arrive too late: a second wire, forged in your name, has already sent her off with a man called Lithgow, whom nobody at the school can identify.
