You are Irene, married to Soames Forsyte, at Old Jolyon's party where June introduces her fiance, the architect Philip Bosinney, to a family that prices everything it touches. Soames appraises the newcomer like a stock holding; you find yourself defending ideas Bosinney barely gets to voice himself. By the end of the evening Soames has claimed Bosinney's talent for his own land at Robin Hill, ostensibly to build you a house, though whose wish it actually satisfies is already in question.
