You play Ethelberta Petherwin, a young widow whose polished name hides that her father is Lady Petherwin's own butler. Lost on Anglebury Heath, you run into Christopher Julian, the sweetheart you once left without explanation, and he works out your secret before you even reach the inn. Lady Petherwin wants you to read your anonymous stories publicly under her name; the chapter ends as Christopher arrives at her door holding a letter that names your father outright.
