You travel under the name Lovel, hiding who you are, when a missed coach strands you beside a garrulous antiquary, Jonathan Oldbuck. He talks antiquities and lost lawsuits the whole road to Fairport, more curious about you than his books allow. In town, a beggar named Edie Ochiltree spots a soldier's bearing under your plain coat before you can explain it. At Oldbuck's house, dinner with Sir Arthur Wardour and his daughter Isabella ends when the tide traps them on a stretch of sand with no way back.
