You play Phineas Finn, a briefless young Irish barrister whom his friend Barrington Erle invites, over a Reform Club sofa, to stand for the vacant seat of Loughshane. The party will cover your election costs; your own nonexistent practice and your father's modest allowance will not cover Westminster's. A letter home brings caution rather than refusal, and as you and Erle race to catch the last train, a telegram reports that Lord Tulla himself will not stand in your way.
