You are Captain Alastair Maclean, riding south through rain-soaked England hostile to your prince, guided by a man who answers only to Midwinter and names no side. He brings you to Lady Norreys at an inn, where she warns that the rising will fail and offers a route that would carry the army away from Scotland and its supply lines. Samuel Johnson turns up with a cart of printer's proofs to hide you from a search. Then a government proclamation, found inside them, names Midwinter as the rising's secret betrayer.
