You play Jean Valjean, turned away from the inn, the prison and a dog kennel before a woman points you toward the bishop's house — where the door has no bolt, the supper is laid before anyone reads your papers, and silver candlesticks light the table. The housekeeper counts the plates into an unlocked cupboard. The bishop leaves the door.
