Newly retired, you are Dickson McCunn, on a walking tour meant to prove you are not yet old. A scornful young poet, John Heritage, falls in beside you and leads the way toward Huntingtower, an old house whose servant denies any tenants, though a woman's face appears at an upstairs window. A gang of street boys led by Dougal has mapped every guard change, and by dusk you are storming the gate as a stopped car unloads a hooded figure — and no one will say yet who it is.
