Fire in the Woods

Phil and Pat had explored every reachable view around Saint John's Reversing Falls except two river islands. They are close enough to tempt us every day and far enough to defeat anyone without a boat. You step into this one-chapter preview with Pat at the center, where choices turn on the people, promises, and pressure already in the room. With the lower island exhausted, both of you turned toward the boat and the upper island still waiting upstream. The chapter closes on a continuation question rather than resolving the novel's larger arc.
