You play Arkady Kirsanov, home from university and bringing a friend: Bazarov, a medical student who treats every belief as something to be tested. Your father meets you at the posting station, apologises for his own emotion, and on the road home admits there is now a woman and an infant living in the smaller wing. On the steps your uncle Pavel takes one look at Bazarov's ungloved hands. Dinner is served at a table already divided into sides.
