A respectable carriage rolls into a provincial town, and you play the gentleman inside it: Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, neither young nor old, fat nor thin, on business you disclose slowly. Over dinner at the inn you collect the governor's name, the landowners worth calling on, and, oddly, which districts have buried the most serfs. Your coachman Selifan notices the question. By dusk the town has welcomed you without learning what it welcomed, and the registration paper still has one blank on it.
