You are young David Copperfield, and the Rookery holds only your mother and Peggotty until a dark-whiskered visitor starts calling. Mr Murdstone brings sweets and grave compliments, and a grip that lingers a moment too long; his friends laugh at jokes about your mother that you cannot understand. Peggotty and your mother quarrel over him for the first time. To ease the house, Peggotty takes you to Yarmouth for a fortnight — and the cart pulls away with Murdstone already at the garden gate.
