You are Clotel, days from the auction block where a Richmond estate will sell you alongside your mother and sister. Horatio Green, the white man who says he loves you, has money enough to buy you but will not put your freedom in writing. On sale day his bid keeps you near him while your mother and sister are bought by a trader bound for New Orleans, and the paper in his pocket proves only that he owns you, not that he has kept his promise.
