You are Barnaby Rudge, walking home through a storm with your raven Grip, when a scarred stranger at the Maypole Inn asks after your mother by name and hints at an unsolved murder. Grip shrieks out a word your mother forbade him to say, and the stranger slips out through the kitchen when thunder kills the lamps. You race Grip ahead to warn her, but the man reaches her door first, seizes her hand, and flees when Joe Willet's lantern appears, though your mother will not say what she recognized.
